Port is a fortified wine specifically produced in the Douro region of northern Portugal. The name comes from Oporto from where barrels were sent out across Europe. The industry benefited hugely from trade agreements with Britain as the market for French wine dipped during times of war and port has become hugely associated with ceremonial toasts and after dinner drinks in this country.
Fonseca declares its vintages only in the most exceptional of years, and in 2011, like many, Fonseca benefitted from a perfect ending to the growing season, ensuring optimum ripeness for their grapes.
