Port is a fortified wine specifically produced in the Douro region of northern Portugal. The name comes from Oporto from where barrels were sent out across Europe. The industry benefited hugely from trade agreements with Britain as the market for French wine dipped during times of war and port has become hugely associated with ceremonial toasts and after dinner drinks in this country.
Taylors are seen as one of the top producers of Tawny Ports, always offering a range of products that are of very high quality. The 20 year old, being aged for longer, offers flavours of greater intensity than you find in the 10 year old. Having mellowed further, the fruit flavours along with the spice and nuttiness are a wonderful combination.
As white Port is becoming more well known it is also increasing in popularity. Generally used as an aperitif or alongside a some olives or a bowl of nuts, it can also be used in a range of cocktails. Tawny Ports are aged in casks, where they loose their initial ruby red colour and take on the colouring from the wood giving them their amber hue. This 10 year old tawny from Fonseca has become smooth and mellow over the ageing process, with hints of raisin and a definite nuttiness on the palate. The finish is long and elegant, this will be great alongside a variety of cheeses.
