Port is a fortified wine specifically produced in the Douro region of northern Portugal. The name comes from Oporto from where barrels were sent out across Europe. The industry benefited hugely from trade agreements with Britain as the market for French wine dipped during times of war and port has become hugely associated with ceremonial toasts and after dinner drinks in this country.
Tawny Ports are aged in casks, where they loose their initial ruby red colour and take on the colouring from the wood giving them their amber hue. This 10 year old tawny from Fonseca has become smooth and mellow over the ageing process, with hints of raisin and a definite nuttiness on the palate. The finish is long and elegant, this will be great alongside a variety of cheeses.
