Champagne

The wines produced on the chalky, limestone hills of Champagne have been associated with royalty and wealth for hundreds of years. Sparkling wine became synonomous with the name Champagne and has been the subject of many legal battles. Today it is accepted as the property of the Champagne producers. Champagne's three regions: Montagne de Reims, Vallee de La Marne and Cotes des Blancs, are in turn allowed to cultivate three separate grape varieties, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. There are hundreds of individual villages, the finest of which are designated Grand Cru (of which there are only seventeen).
