All the production is situated at the East of the country, situated around Vienna (capital). The white wines are mainly from Gruner Veltliner, Roter Veltliner and Riesling grapes. These wines are fresh and mineral, always with a low alcohol content. Red wines are beautifully fruity with dark fruit characters and balanced tannins. The main grapes are Zweiglt, Blaufränkisch and Sankt Laurent. Austria is one of the emergent wine countries in the UK.
2015 Willi Opitz Private Cellar Victoria Opitz Goldamsel Beerenauslese Burgenland (Half Btl - 1/37.5cl)
Located in Burgenland, Austria, Willi Opitz Winery produces a range of high quality wines and has earned a variety of awards recognising their success. The Goldamsel Beerenauslese is a delicious dessert wine which oozes with tropical fruit flavours, the level of acidity is carefully and expertly balanced to ensure that it does not become over bearing. Pair this with a fruit based dessert such as an apple tarte tatin, or perhaps alongside a strong cheese and some crackers for a different experience.
This fruit forward wine from Gernot Heinrich is made from vines aged up to 30 years old. 2015 was full of sunshine and heat, (a welcome change from the rainy 2014). As a result the grapes were full and healthy, with slightly less acidity than perhaps expected. This is an easy drinking wine with cherry and red fruits on the palate and a hint of spice to finish.
Citrus and fresh apple aromas -with also typical spicy Veltliner notes on the nose. On the palate there is good intensity of fruit, with tangy grapefruit leading to a long savoury finish with flinty note.
