Pinotage is a classic South African variety and originates from a 1925 cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (known as Hermitage in South Africa). The Fairview Pinotage was primarily harvested from bush vines in Malmesbury and Agter-Paarl, some of which are over 25 years old. These older vineyards are dry farmed and the vines grow on deep soils. This is supplemented by fruit from an irrigated, younger, trellised vineyard at Fairview.
Made from a national grape called Bonarda (Corbeau in France, Charbono in USA). From two vineyards from Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo (Mendoza) at 900 metres above the sea level
Deep ruby to deep purple colour. Pure strawberry and blueberry fruit abound on the enticing nose. The palate is complex and layered with all spices, cherry, tobacco and plum fruits. Finely structured tannins provide texture whilst a clean acidity maintains freshness. The finish is long and displays ripe blueberry, sweet smoke and dark fruits.
The wine is aged for 6 months in American oak barriques.
Having arrived in Australia in the 1950's the Mitolo family began as market farmers growing vegetables, they branched out into the wine industry many years later and produced their first wine in 1999. Their business plan consisted of 6 words - individuality, integrity, quality, purity, elegance and power. This is an easy drinking Cabernet Sauvignon from Mitolo, bright and juicy on the palate full of dark fruit flavours and a definite richness.
