Burgundy

With all the hype attributed to Bordeaux, Burgundy still remains the most complex and intellectual of France's dreamland of wine-making. What is lacked in varietal blending, as only two grapes are used - Pinot and Chardonnay, is made up for by the 'terroir' - the expression of geological and climatic conditions, which can vary so dramatically over as little as ten or twenty yards within a single vineyard.

2014 Chablis Domaine Bernard Defaix (Bottle - 1/75cl)

The weather in 2014 was slightly unpredictable with a warm and slightly humid start to the year, this called for an early harvest at the beginning of September. Made with 100% Chardonnay grapes, the Chablis from Domaine Bernard Defaix is known for its freshness and powerful palate. Notes of apple and citrus - grapefruit and lemon, this is the perfect wine to serve alongside some fresh seafood.

2015 Chablis 1er Cru Cotes De Lechet Domaine Bernard Dfx (Half Btl - 1/37.5cl)

Made from the domaines oldest vines (planted 1955) which benefit from perfect South/South-East sun exposure. This cuvée is partially fermented in oak barrels & aged for 12 months on fine lees with regular "batonnage". After tasting, this is blended with rest of the cuvée aged in stainless steel tanks. The final blend is bottled 18 months after the harvest to emphasise the Côte de Lechets power. The bouquet marries floral elegance with the mineral intensity of the terroir. The palate is characterised by fullness, richness and length.

2011 Montagny Les Guignottes Domaine Michel Andreotti (Bottle - 1/75cl)

We were surprised at our preference for the non Premier Cru cuvee Les Guignottes in 2011, the balance and poise were noticeable, of course as Arlette pointed out the 1er cru was probably just in its shell, either way this is a fine Chardonnay, steely and pure.

2015 Latricieres Chambertin Grand Cru Faiveley (Case - 6/75cl)

High quality wine has been produced on this small plot for hundreds of years, but the vineyards origins have been lost to the fog of history; the first known reference of this Grand Cru is from 1508. This wine has a rich savoury nose with layers of spice, fruit and wood followed by gentle attack on the palate with velvet tannins, elegant structure and remarkable length.
