Bordeaux

The Bordeaux blend has been copied with considerable success in many other wine regions, the ultimate compliment. The Left Bank of the Gironde River boasts the great Chateaux of the Medoc and Graves, whilst on the Right Bank, Saint Emilion (arguably the most beautiful commune) and Pomerol. Bordeaux is synonymous with the finest quality, predominantly in red wines though great dry whites are made in the Pessac Leognan, and most wine lovers will strive to taste the sweet white wines of Chateau Yquem and its neighbouring Chateau in Sauternes and Barsac.

2014 Ausone 1er Grand Cru St Emilion - Single OWC (Bottle - 1/75cl)

60% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot. 85% New Oak. 27 hl/ha. 14000 bts. Deep purple but not as deep as some years, as per the vintage as a whole. There is complexity on the nose here. You can smell the terroir, layered aromas, with violets and black fruit. On the palate it sits well very cool and caressing, the tannins are not aggressive at all, gentle and seductive, but it is still …

2014 Cantemerle 5th Cru Haut Medoc (Case - 6/75cl)

The Château Cantemerle 2014 has a bright and slightly glossy bouquet with blackcherries and boysenberry fruit, hints of tobacco and gravel coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with quite "fat" tannin that lend this Cantemerle weight in the mouth, although I would have liked more precision and terroir-expression to surface on the finish. This is a "stocky" C…

2014 Chateau Rousseau Monbazillac (Bottle - 1/75cl)

This is a great value alternative to the sweet wines of Sauternes with candied and ripe fruit character! Monbazillac is an AOC appellation for sweet wines made in an area in the wider region of Bergerac, in southwestern France. While not as famous nor as expensive as their western neighbors from Sauternes, Monbazillac wines are some of the most well-known sweet white wines pro…

2014 Cos D'Estournel 2nd Cru St Estephe (Case - 6/75cl)

This is deep, lots of coloured legs, raspberry on the nose, Kirsch, damson, there is strength here more so than the Montrose on this showing I think. On the finish, there is tension and saline notes, good wine here, loads of tannin, but they are very polished, chocolate, and very long. Rich, fresh. One of the best. 93/95/100 - 2028-2045+. Nickolls & Perks - W J Gardener. Deca…

2014 L'Eglise Clinet Pomerol (Case - 6/75cl)

Quite a bit deeper in colour than the Petit Eglise, pungent stalky, damsons, lovely and intense. Textured, lively, so much fruit, concentrated. It has deft touch on the grip. The oak is prominent at the moment, but this is classy. 92-94/100 - 2022-2040. Nickolls & Perks - W J Gardener Decanter 18/20

2014 La Mission Haut Brion Pessac Leognan (Case - 12/75cl)

Good deep plum, the nose offers loganberry, quite precise, pungent, touch of cedar, quite complex, not a heavy weight, an elegant nose, lovely silky palate, really like this, I know its the first visit but its the style is relaxed, there is a sense of effortless quality. There is again elevated acidity but its in proportion. The tannins are cautious. Great promise here. A mini …

2014 Lamothe Vincent Intense Sauvignon Bordeaux White (Bottle - 1/75cl)

Fabien Vincent certainly gets the best out of his land, in Red, White and Rose. This second tier, in terms of quality, white bordeaux is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, on soil which reminds Fabien of that in Sancerre, and certainly there are similarities in the wine too. This is touch stricter than the entry level Bordeaux white, with a streamlined precision, it is dry, but …
