The Bordeaux blend has been copied with considerable success in many other wine regions, the ultimate compliment. The Left Bank of the Gironde River boasts the great Chateaux of the Medoc and Graves, whilst on the Right Bank, Saint Emilion (arguably the most beautiful commune) and Pomerol. Bordeaux is synonymous with the finest quality, predominantly in red wines though great dry whites are made in the Pessac Leognan, and most wine lovers will strive to taste the sweet white wines of Chateau Yquem and its neighbouring Chateau in Sauternes and Barsac.
The Carmes de Rieussec 2014 is a blend of 92% Semillon and 4% each of Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. It has a very pure and honeyed bouquet that demonstrates superb intensity. The palate is unctuous on the entry with a touch of ginger, plenty of botrytised fruit but just missing the persistence on the finish that cuts away a little swiftly, just as the wine is getting into its…
Again very full colour to the rim, again inky with blue fruits, seems fresh on the nose, lovely deep Pauillac nose, earthy truffles, perfume, shows well, cool fruited, round soft and generous but still masculine, earthy grilled notes, complex really excellent effort. 92-94/100 - 2025-2040. Mouton Rothschild became a first growth in 1973 due to the extraordinary dedication and hard work of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. His pioneering approach is epitomised in the decision since 1945 to commission a different artist to design the label for each new vintage, payment for which is reputedly offered in the shape of five cases of the bottled wine.
One of the five first growths of Bordeaux, and probably the most famous of them all. Located right at the northern limit of Pauillac, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend with the soil made up of fine deep gravel, mixed with aeolian sand on a subsoil of tertiary limestone. It is well-drained and well-exposed to the sun. The finesse and elegance at Lafite is undeniable.
Chateau Latour is on the St Julien/Pauillac border and adjacent to Chateau Leoville Lascases. The generosity and heavenly balance of St Julien is combined with power and strength here to create what is for some, the finest vineyard in Bordeaux. 2000 was described as an exceptional year by the winemakes at Chateau Latour; the warm and dry summer allowing the grapes to ripen grad…
Very full plum, the nose is reasonably responsive black cassis some chocolate, very pleasant entree here, delicate and supple, like the style here, its a little lighter than some, earlier drinking, and an excellent result. Classy finish. 92-94/100 - 2024-2040. Nickolls & Perks - W J Gardener. Decanter 17.25/20 NM 93-95/100
The Château Canon 2014 is a blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, the estate moving towards the latter in terms of its new plantings, which will possibly see 40% in 15 or 20 years time. It was picked from 22 September until 6 October for the Merlot and three days later for the Cabernet Franc, matured in around 80% new oak. It has a glorious bouquet with great purity and d…
Peach and nectarine on the clean nose and palate, lifted by hints of white flowers and lemony botrytis. Finishes with a saline edge. Decanter 17.5/20. JS 87-88/100 NM 90-92/100
Quite a bit deeper in colour than the Petit Eglise, pungent stalky, damsons, lovely and intense. Textured, lively, so much fruit, concentrated. It has deft touch on the grip. The oak is prominent at the moment, but this is classy. 92-94/100 - 2022-2040. Nickolls & Perks - W J Gardener Decanter 18/20
