The Bordeaux blend has been copied with considerable success in many other wine regions, the ultimate compliment. The Left Bank of the Gironde River boasts the great Chateaux of the Medoc and Graves, whilst on the Right Bank, Saint Emilion (arguably the most beautiful commune) and Pomerol. Bordeaux is synonymous with the finest quality, predominantly in red wines though great dry whites are made in the Pessac Leognan, and most wine lovers will strive to taste the sweet white wines of Chateau Yquem and its neighbouring Chateau in Sauternes and Barsac.
Owned and run by the Lafon family since 1903, Chateau Tour St Bonnet is spread across 40 hectares with an average vine age of 35 years old. The estate is known for producing elegant and intense wines with dark fruit driven flavours. The 2006 is no exception, aged for around 18 months in oak foudres which gives a more subtle flavour than the commonly used barriques, there are notes of dried plum and pencil shavings on the nose with dominant dark fruits on the palate - theres a definite savoury note here. This is a great wine to serve alongside a meal, try it with a roast beef dinner.
Deep glossy appearance, the nose is deep and broody, with peppercorn, earthy, cedar, really classic Pauillac nose, perfumed, polished, silky palate, toasty tannins on the finish, quite muscular, this is going to be a sizeable vintage, doesnt have the density in the mid palate of Latour or Mouton, quite flashy, not as polished as the Pichon Lalande, but its a good Pontet. 92-94/…
Decent colour, again ripe open red fruits on the nose, with added black cherry, reasonable complexity too, touch herbal, cool fruit, sleek and pure, the tannins are a little fuller, toasty notes, this will full out 91-93/100 - 2024-2040. Nickolls & Perks - W J Gardener. Decanter 17.5/20 NM 90-92/100
