The Bordeaux blend has been copied with considerable success in many other wine regions, the ultimate compliment. The Left Bank of the Gironde River boasts the great Chateaux of the Medoc and Graves, whilst on the Right Bank, Saint Emilion (arguably the most beautiful commune) and Pomerol. Bordeaux is synonymous with the finest quality, predominantly in red wines though great dry whites are made in the Pessac Leognan, and most wine lovers will strive to taste the sweet white wines of Chateau Yquem and its neighbouring Chateau in Sauternes and Barsac.
This second wine of the ever improving Chateau Lynch Moussas, offers smoky tabacco aromas a generously textured palate, and a really impressive length. This is classified as Haut Medoc but the stylistic Pauillac vineyard characteristics are evident.
Chateau Rieussec is synonomous with great sweet wines; now part of the Chateau Lafite stable, continued investment has been guaranteed and the wines continue to impress. The 2008 vintage in Sauternes was very good if not...
Again very full colour to the rim, again inky with blue fruits, seems fresh on the nose, lovely deep Pauillac nose, earthy truffles, perfume, shows well, cool fruited, round soft and generous but still masculine, earthy grilled notes, complex really excellent effort. 92-94/100 - 2025-2040. Very full plum, the nose is reasonably responsive black cassis some chocolate, very pleasant entree here, delicate and supple, like the style here, its a little lighter than some, earlier drinking, and an excellent result. Classy finish. 92-94/100 - 2024-2040. Nickolls & Perks - W J Gardener. Decanter 17.25/20 NM 93-95/100
Chateuau Moulinet is a fantastic example of a Pomerol wine, the estate is one of the oldest and largest in the region. Over the last 3 years the Chateau has undergone extensive renovations, combining new techniques with traditional methods such as hand...
The Château Canon 2014 is a blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, the estate moving towards the latter in terms of its new plantings, which will possibly see 40% in 15 or 20 years time. It was picked from 22 September until 6 October for the Merlot and three days later for the Cabernet Franc, matured in around 80% new oak. It has a glorious bouquet with great purity and d…
Quite a bit deeper in colour than the Petit Eglise, pungent stalky, damsons, lovely and intense. Textured, lively, so much fruit, concentrated. It has deft touch on the grip. The oak is prominent at the moment, but this is classy. 92-94/100 - 2022-2040. Nickolls & Perks - W J Gardener Decanter 18/20
Its amazing to visit this vineyard located as it is in a surprisingly urban location inside the south west city perimeter. The oldest of the first growths, the vineyard is made up of roughly equal percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with about ten percent Cabernet Franc, oh and one percent Petit Verdot. The wines are often restrained and aristocratic in their youth opening up to reveal incredible complexity with beautifully spicy tabacco and cedar aromas. Truly outstanding.
Chateau Latour is on the St Julien/Pauillac border adjacent to Chateau Leoville Lascases. The generosity and heavenly balance of St Julien is combined with power and strength here to create what is for some the finest vineyard in Bordeaux.
