Blended Malt Whisky
Blended malt whisky relates to the term of using no grain whiskies in a blend, simply 100% single malts. These type of whiskies are more complex than blended Scotch whiskies that contain a percentage of grain in their blend, which is cheaper to produce. A particular bottler of Blended malts that we love are Compass Box, who are always pushing the boundaries and experimenting with great new blends.
Murray McDavid's the Vatting series is all about blending some interesting whiskies to a theme. The Àlainn 27 Year Old is all about Islay whiskies, and these have been brought together (vatted) Islay after being finished in a Sherry butt. It was bottled in 2017 at 44.9% ABV.
