Viognier became famous in the production of the great Rhone wines of Condrieu. It is now made globally, offering exotic vibrant aromatic wines. This St Chinian example is maybe a tad drier and fresher than some, really well made and interesting. it is also surprisingly resilient, with time in bottle it shows, delicate flecks and nuance, and retains a wonderful freshness.
This is a lovely deep red colour, bursting with dark fruits and hints of cedar on the nose. Medium bodied with a good balance of acidity and tannins on the palate. Pair this with a joint of lamb on a Sunday afternoon.
Another excellent value crowd pleaser from Les Vignerons:
Medium bodied, esasy drinking with lots of fruit. Great for informal gatherings.
Spanning approximately 60 hectares, the vines at Rovereto are an average of 25 years old. The harvest is done by hand and the wine is aged for around 5 months in steel tanks, and further refined once it hits the bottle. This is an intense yet delicate wine with fresh fruit flavours such as green apple on the palate, the finish is long with a definite elegance.
