Hayman’s 1850 Reserve Gin is based on the style of gin sold before the 1861 Single Bottle Act in England, when all spirits where sold from the cask. Casks were used to store, transport and serve gin from.
In the 1850s, gin was served from these casks in drinking establishments known as gin palaces. These were luxuriously furnished and situated on most street corners in London.
At their peak, there were at least 5,000 gin palaces in London and they played a major role in introducing drinking as a social pleasure as people stood around the bar, drinking and talking.
During this time gin was served from large wooden casks into smaller casks or jugs.
Hayman’s 1850 Reserve Gin follows the traditions of this Gin Palace style of gin. The recipe is distilled to an 1850s gin recipe which sees juniper and coriander as the dominant botanicals.
Following distillation the spirit is then rested in Scotch whisky cask wooden barrels for 3-4 weeks which makes it a smooth mellow style of gin.
Hayman’s 1850 Reserve Gin is distilled in small batches of just 5,000 bottles and each bottle is individually numbered alongside the batch number.
The result is a flavour with smooth subtle notes from the wood and appealing hints of spice and pepper from the juniper. While the coriander gives it an aromatic not together it’s a well balanced fresh full bodied gin worthy of the top shelf.
