Originally a meal mill, Glen Keith distillery is in Keith, on the banks of the River Isla, opposite the Strathisla distillery. Although much of the mill has been demolished, Chivas Brothers converted it to a distillery in 1958 and it was one of the first new malt distilleries to be built in Scotland since the distillery-building boom of the 1890s. In 1970, Glen Keith became the first distillery in Scotland to have a gas-fired still and the first microprocessor for controlling aspects of production was installed 10 years later. Glen Keith looks compact because it has no warehouses: spirit is taken to company warehouses just outside the town. The distillery has an intact Saladin Box malting system, though it has not been used since 1976. Glen Keith started with a set of three stills to triple-distill its spirit resulting in a very light, smooth distillate for blending. This was discontinued in 1970 when two more stills were added and the distillery went over to double distillation, leaving one of the stills silent. In 1983 a sixth was added.
