Aged for 11 years in one single cask 1275, a first fill bourbon barrel. This incredible Ardbeg release was distilled in 1998 before being bottled in 2009 at natural cask strength. There was only 252 bottles released making this single malt super rare indeed! The nose offers notes of vanilla pods, mocha, fresh cigar box, cocoa and burnt toffee, quite astonishing! The mocha develops in the glass after some time whilst the oaky smoke comes into play. On the palate it is rich and intense, an abundance of bonfire smoke, caramalised toffee and vanilla. The finish is long, the mocha comes back which puffs at the back of the palate. Rich wood smoke gives the finish a touch of perfection. an awesome single malt.
In 1815, John McDougall founded the distillery that now sits along the south coast of Islay beside Laphroaig and Lagavulin. Ardbeg, has a much smaller scale of production than that of it's neighbors, remaining very sought after indeed.
Like many other Scotch distilleries Ardbeg, has closed and reopened it's doors once or twice itself. The distillery first closed down and stopped production in 1981 after funds became problematic. Several years later in 1989, it reopened on a small scale which then lead to another closure in 1996, leading the owners to put the place up for sale. Not long after, the distillery was bought by Glenmorangie Co which, indeed, lead to a brighter future for whisky production at Ardbeg. One of their staples, Uigedail, is now an ever popular whisky inspired by and named after the distilleries water source. Uigedail was later titled 'World Whisky of Year' in 2009 by enthusiast and author, Jim Murray. Ever since, Ardbeg has continued to overwhelm the world of whisky drinkers with it's unique, unbeatably rich peated charcter.
