This Chardonnay is produced from high altitude vineyards, and by avoiding the use of oak and malolactic fermentation, the character of the terrior is carried through on superb minerality.
Clos des Fous in Chile is built out of a resistance towards popular opinion which suggests that Chilean wines are boring, overripe and industrially produced. Four wine guys, viticulturist Paco Leyton, winemaker Francois Massoc, terrior expert Pedro Parra and wine consultant Albert Cussen, each gifted with determination to bring us incredible Chilean wines which express the personality of the terrior.
The 2014 Locura 1 was already in bottle, a Chablis-style, fresh white with Chardonnay typicity from a slightly warmer vintage than 2013; it is very accessible and easy to drink. There are notes of white flowers and fruit, fennel and aniseed. This is wider, a little riper and rounder than the 2013, as well as gentle and easy to drink. Some 1,800 cases produced.
Green-tinged straw. Lively, mineral-accented aromas of pear and Meyer lemon are joined by hints of jasmine and anise that emerge with air. Silky, concentrated and seamless in texture, offering energetic citrus and orchard fruit flavors that slowly deepen on the back half. Finishes sappy, minerally and quite long; echoes of citrus pith and dusty minerals add closing cut.
