All the fruit was grown in Marlborough's Southern Valleys and primarily sourced from the Yarrum Vineyard situated on the Brancott/Ben Morven ridge. The wind-blown loess soils are comprised of clay-loams with degrees of gravel. The grapes were hand harvested, de-stemmed and put into open top fermenters. The fruit was then allowed to soak on skins prior to the onset of indigenous yeast fermentation, then plunged daily by hand. After fermentation the wine was pressed, racked and filled to French oak barriques (45% new).
In 2009, Kevin Judd, the founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay and the man to direct that company's first 25 vintages, decided to establish his own label. He named his label Greywacke, after New Zealand's prolific bedrock. Kevin Judd's quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. These prime viticultural sites are cultivated using yield restricting vineyard management techniques and intense canopy management regimes.
Medium ruby colored, the 2009 Pinot Noir is ageing wonderfully. The nose offers warm berry and earthy aromas while the medium-bodied palate is elegant and showing some chewy tannins on the long finish
