It seems appropriate that a Champagne house with a Chardonnay obsession would refuse to include any other grape varietal in their premium cuvees. Dom Ruinart is a Blanc de Blancs Champagne, sourced exclusively from Grand Cru sites in the Cote des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. It is only produced when the winemakers at Ruinart deem the grape quality to be high enough!

The 2002 vintage was very well received as soon as it entered the market in 2012, and the years since have seen further development of character. We recommend drinking this delicious Blanc de Blancs over the next few years!

Information About Maison Ruinart

The spiritual founder of Maison Ruinart of Champagne is Dom Thierry Ruinart. This man was a humble Benedictine monk and an exceptional scholar of theology and history. At the age of 23, he left Champagne to study at the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Pres near Paris where he was exposed to the city and the court of King Louis XIV. He discovered 'vin de mousse'  or sparkling wine, already popular with fashionable young aristocrats, and was convinced that it would take off!

Twenty years after Dom Ruinart's death in 1709, Nicolas Ruinart would begin producing vin de mousse in Champagne. These first bottles were intended as complementary gifts for clients of his drapery business, but within six years the business was exclusively sparkling wine. Nicolas Ruinart and his descendants would manage Maison Ruinart for the next 200 years.

Still a stunner, the 2002 Dom Ruinart is just as gorgeous as it has always been. Warm, toasty notes meld into apricots, succulent peaches, white flowers and spices in a rich, expansive Champagne that captures the essence of the year. The 2002 is pure, full-throttle opulence, yet all the elements are very much in balance. A creamy, resonant finish rounds things out in style. Multiple tastings have shown that the 2002 is shutting down in bottle, so my suggestion is to be patient. What a gorgeous wine this is. This bottle was disgorged in March 2012.

Deluxe Blanc de Blancs. Really lifted nose with a lovely silky texture. Despite the low dosage (6.5 g/l) there's a certain richness of fruit underneath. This is a very good vintage! Still extremely tight with lots more to give.

Rating : 18/20
