This is a very fine expression of a Pinot Noir dominated Champagne; full bodied with great intensity of flavour. A few years in the bottle have softened this up nicely, but it could develop more over the next couple of years.
The blend here is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay.
The House of Paul Bara, founded in 1833, is located in Bouzy, a highly respected Champagne Vineyard region. The 100% Grands Crus vines here have been cultivated for generations by a super dedicated family team, now headed up by Chantale Bara. This kind of knowledge and knowhow cannot easily be bought.
We are delighted to be associated with such quality, shipping three wines, the Brut reserve, Special Club 2006 and 2005 Cuvee Comtesse Marie de France, our first consignment for the autumn 2017 season.
Disgorged in late June 2014 after almost ten years on the lees, Bara's straw-yellow colored 2004 Special Club Grand Cru from the coteau de Bouzy offers a clear, bright, rich and complex bouquet of ripe fruits along with some spicy flavors. Full-bodied, rich and well structured, this is a truly expressive, fresh and vivid if not still (too) young Champagne that will polish its edges over the next couple of years. Compared with the purity and finesse of, say, the 2004 Lanson Gold Label, Bara's Special Club is not only bigger but also more tight and powerful. The length is impressive and thrilling.
The 2004 Brut Grand Cru "Special Club" is quite forward and open, which makes it an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. Dried flowers, dried pear, smoke, almond and lightly honeyed notes meld into the supple, resonant finish. The Special Club is nicely resolved and softened. As such, I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later. Disgorged: December 2014.
