There are very few Blanc de Noirs Champagnes which can compete in the same league as this one, and perhaps none at this price point...
The most exclusive wine made by Egly-Ouriet, 100% Pinot Noir sourced from 70 year old vines from the 'Les Crayeres' Grand Cru Ambonnay and aged on lees for at least 70 months! Lower bottle pressure allows the base wine to shine, without the mask of intense fizz!
Egly-Ouriet is located in Ambonnay, one of the finest villages for Pinot Noir in the whole of Champagne. Here, the fourth generation in his family, Francis Egly manages the vineyards and creates Champagne wines of incredible quality. After his father retired, Francis took to organic and biodynamic practices in the vineyards and ensured low yields.
As his winemaking style, Francis goes for extended aging 'sur lie', with a minimum of four years prior to disgorgement, and prefers a lower pressure in bottles, so the carbonation doesn't mask the base wine!
Very substantial, complex nose with considerable development. A treat to be tasting really good Blanc de Noirs rather than a rustic Aube fizz chez supermarket. I'd like to see this next to Bollinger…Really rewarding. Very long.
Egly-Ouriet's famous NV Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Brut Les Crayères is 100% old vine Pinot Noir from the eponymous Lieu-dit in Ambonnay, whose vines were planted in 1947. The youngest release blends 40% of vintage 2008 with 60% of 2009. The wine starts very intense on the nose and intertwines pineapple aromas with new oak flavors. Pure, lean, straight and elegant, this is a full-bodied, complex and very persistent Blanc de Noir with great tension and ageing potential. The low dosage is only two grams per liter.
A total rock star wine, the NV Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs Les Crayeres VV emerges from the old-vine Crayeres lieu-dit in Ambonnay. Rich, deep and explosive in the glass, the Crayeres boasts superb intensity and richness, with all of the weight of these 70+ year-old vines and 60 months of sur-lie aging in the glass. Wild flowers, honey, red berries, smoke, licorice, game and chalk are pushed forward in a warm, resonant Champagne that captures the essence of Ambonnay. Slightly oxidative notes from the 64 months the wine spent on its lees add character, while a touch of oak is barely noticeable and only in the wine's overall feel. This is just about as good as it gets. The current release is 60% 2008 and 40% 2007, bottled with dosage of 3 grams/liter. Disgorged: November 2014.
