Tom Stevenson on Champagne Palmer: 'One of Champagne's Greatest Cooperatives' This wine is a marvellous always-vintage cuvée, made only in exceptional years. It is 100% Chardonnay, half from Le Montagne de Reims, including Premier Crus Trépail and Villers Marmery, giving precise and emphatic minerality with a creamy texture. The other half comes from the Côte Sézanne giving the wines a unique intensity of fruit and decent ageing potential. Champagne Palmer has evolved considerably over the past half century from its roots in Avize. It is now one of the most succesful Co-operative houses, based in the centre of Reims. With over 300 hectares of vines, 180 of which are rated Grands Crus, they have an enviable array of quality Chardonnay(50%) & Pinot Noir(40%) with which to blend their beautiful wines. The Blancs de Blancs exemplifies the overall quality of this Domaine.
The delicate Chardonnay grapes come from two Grand Cru terroirs giving this champagne an amazingly fine and harmonious expression. It shows aromas of white flowers and honeysuckle, drifting above a palate of subtle citrus and pure white fruits, balanced by ripe autolytic notes of almond and brioche. Good acidity and amazing textural richness. Its fresh and silky mouth-feel develops and lingers with typical mineral notes conferred by the chalky soil. A perfect summer aperitif.
The appearance is very attractive and still youthful with super fine bead and a delicate platinum colour with emerging golden hints. The nose is quite something, saline, lemon, intense and very pure, grassy, a complex nose but not forced, it's like a fine Meursault. The palate has a lovely lacy texture, the fruit is ample and concentrated but delicacy is the key here, refined with excellent balance, showing especially on the finish which is long and honeyed. This has come a long way in the last 6 months, and will evolve no doubt but why keep it. A remarkable wine.
