The Tradition Brut is the entry level cuvee from Champagne Gosset-Brabant. It is lighter than the Reserve Grand Cru, ideal for family gatherings and pre-dinner drinks. The blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay and is made from 100% Premier Cru Vineyards. The current wine is dominated by the outstanding 2008 vintage base wine.
Christian Gosset and his brother run their 10 hectare family domaine with great energy and passion. Located in the centrally located village of Ay right opposite the slightly more famous Maison Bollinger, it is not difficult to understand why the brothers are so proud of their 55000 bottle production. Dominated by the wonderful Pinot Noir vineyards of Ay, Champagne Gosset-Brabant make powerful full-flavoured Champagnes which work remarkably well as quality table wines as well as the usual aperitifs. A high proportion of family owned vineyards, a culture of organic farming, and a minimum of three and a half years bottle age before disgorgement all add up to hand-crafted wines which represent exceptional value for money.
Gosset-Brabant's entry-level, non-vintage brut is made of 70 percent Pinot Noir, 20 percent Chardonnay and ten percent Meunier, from the villages of Ay, Dizy and Mareuil-sur-Ay. The current release is based on 2005, and the Gossets use the Tradition blend itself for reserve wine, so 30 percent of this is the blend of the 2004 Tradition. It's fragrant and creamy, with earthy notes of red cherry, strawberry, apple skins and aniseed. While it's not a complex wine, it's delicious and satisfying to drink, with enough body to be versatile at the table. Peter Liem www.champagneguide.net
The current Cuvée is from the base year 2007 with 33% reserve wines included from 2006, 2005 & 2004.
