Champagne Gosset-Brabant are specialists in the production of Pinot Noir dominated Champagnes. This cuvee, made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, hence the name Noirs d'Ay, is really something special, the generosity and volume in the mouth is impressive, backed up with a full flavour. The length and overall feel of this wine is that it bats above its station. Blancs de noirs Champagnes are fairly popular and if you consider Bollinger's Vieilles Vignes Francaises is made from the same blend, and is literally made from vines across the road and retails at over £400 per bottle then this is a no brainer....
Christian Gosset and his brother run their 10 hectare family domaine with great energy and passion. Located in the centrally located village of Ay right opposite the slightly more famous Maison Bollinger, it is not difficult to understand why the brothers are so proud of their 55000 bottle production. Dominated by the wonderful Pinot Noir vineyards of Ay, Champagne Gosset-Brabant make powerful full-flavoured Champagnes which work remarkably well as quality table wines as well as the usual aperitifs. A high proportion of family owned vineyards, a culture of organic farming, and a minimum of three and a half years bottle age before disgorgement all add up to hand-crafted wines which represent exceptional value for money.
For the first time, Gosset-Brabant has released a pure Ay champagne, made of 100-percent Pinot Noir. The nose alone is worth making a special search for this wine, as it is so headily expressive and full of character. While it carries a deep, concentrated richness, it's also extremely fine in tone, with tightly-knit aromas of blackberry, cassis, raspberry and dark chocolate, shifting in elegant layers of complexity as it opens in the glass. The palate carries a similar feeling of depth and refinement, feeling ample and confident as it stains the palate with its pure, poignant fragrance. The first time I tasted this wine was in the spring of 2008, when the Gossets were still working out the dosage - that first bottle was dosed at six grams per litre, and the final release contains four grams. While the lower dosage does bring out more vinosity on the palate, drawing your attention to the sappy concentration of fruit, I feel like the six-gram dosage (still within the bounds of extra brut) resulted in more complexity and greater dimension on the palate. Regardless, this is still a terrific wine, intensely expressive of the Ay terroir and demonstrating yet again why Ay just might be the greatest Pinot village of them all.
