Ruinart probably produces the most recognised Blanc de Blancs Champagne; its distinctive clear, flask-shaped bottle is truly difficult to ignore! The Chardonnay is mostly sourced from the Premier Crus of the Cote des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims, as well as Sezannais, with around 25% being more mature reserve wines.
This is a lovely fresh aperitif Champagne with plenty of ripe citrus aromas and some floral and tropical fruit aromas. The attack is direct, but well rounded with a long refreshing finish!
If removed from its box, take care to store this wine away from light!
The spiritual founder of Maison Ruinart of Champagne is Dom Thierry Ruinart. This man was a humble Benedictine monk and an exceptional scholar of theology and history. At the age of 23, he left Champagne to study at the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Pres near Paris where he was exposed to the city and the court of King Louis XIV. He discovered 'vin de mousse' or sparkling wine, already popular with fashionable young aristocrats, and was convinced that it would take off!
Twenty years after Dom Ruinart's death in 1709, Nicolas Ruinart would begin producing vin de mousse in Champagne. These first bottles were intended as complementary gifts for clients of his drapery business, but within six years the business was exclusively sparkling wine. Nicolas Ruinart and his descendants would manage Maison Ruinart for the next 200 years.
