'R' de Ruinart is the original wine of this Champagne house with Chardonnay taking centre-stage, making up 40% of the cuvee,
This is a wonderful aperitif Champagne, very fresh and refined, carrying aromas of ripe pears and apricots, hazelnuts roasted with a drop of honey, and freshly baked brioche. On the palate there is powerful attack, voluptuous body and fine effervescence before a long finish. Enjoy!
The spiritual founder of Maison Ruinart of Champagne is Dom Thierry Ruinart. This man was a humble Benedictine monk and an exceptional scholar of theology and history. At the age of 23, he left Champagne to study at the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Pres near Paris where he was exposed to the city and the court of King Louis XIV. He discovered 'vin de mousse' or sparkling wine, already popular with fashionable young aristocrats, and was convinced that it would take off!
Twenty years after Dom Ruinart's death in 1709, Nicolas Ruinart would begin producing vin de mousse in Champagne. These first bottles were intended as complementary gifts for clients of his drapery business, but within six years the business was exclusively sparkling wine. Nicolas Ruinart and his descendants would manage Maison Ruinart for the next 200 years.
