Champagne Pol Roger's Prestige Cuvee is named for their most famous advocate, Sir Winston Churchill, to whom the style is also devoted. While the exact blend is a well kept secret, this cuvee is dominated by Pinot Noir, and designed with full-bodied character and a high intensity of flavour which would be left to mature.
Inspired by Churchill's famous expression "my tastes are simple, I am easily satisfied with the best", the winemakers at Pol Roger seek to create a Champagne wine which would satisfy their honourable fan.
Champagne Pol Roger was founded in 1849 and now owns 87 hectares of vineyards on prime sites in the Vallée d'Epernay and on the Côte des Blancs. Its cellars run for 7km and are on three levels, the deepest known as the ‘cave de prise de mousse' at 33m below street level. As the name suggests this is where the wine undergoes its secondary fermentation in bottle. The fact that this deep cellar is at 9o or less, rather than a normal cellar temperature of 11-12o, thus prolonging this fermentation, is one contributing factor to the quality and particular style of the wines and their famously fine bubbles.
Tasted blind. More mousse here, suggesting greater youth than the previous wine (1999 magnum), though it becomes broader in the glass. Tighter than 1999 from magnum and more bright lemony citrus. Long and structured by the acidity. Sinewy and really clean but still creamy. Very tight and youthful and tastes more Chardonnay focused. My guess: 2002 in bottle.
The 2002 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is wonderfully open, expressive and resonant. The richness of the vintage comes through nicely, yet the more overt elements are very nicely balanced by a good deal of freshness. Baked apple, pastry, candied lemon, dried flowers and warm, toasty notes shape the generous, resonant finish. With time in the glass, the 2002 takes a on a striking, vinous character. Readers might want to consider opening the 2002 a few hours in advance, as it really blossoms with air.
