A delicious blend of 53% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay, 7% Pinot Meunier and 15% Bouzy red wines creates this Veuve Clicquot rose Champagne. After an exceptinal growing year, it was decided to create a vintage Champagne from the grapes of the 2004 harvest! For the vintage offerings, only grapes sourced from Grands and Premiers Crus are used, creating high quality wines.
Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin was originally founded, as Maison Clicquot, in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot-Muiron. The business, at the time, was not exclusively involved in Champagne wine production, and maintained ventures in banking and the wool trade.
Champagne's most famous woman would appear in 1798 after marrying Francois Clicquot, the son of Philippe. Francois was most passionate about the wines of Maison Clicquot, and shared all of his knowledge of production and the business with his young wife. After the untimely death of her husband in 1805, Madame Clicquot assumed management of the business in spite of her age, only 27 years old, and the traditional gender roles of the time.
Under her guidance, the company was redirected entirely towards the production and sale of Champagne wines. The 'Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin' as she would sign numerous letters to associates, demonstrated exceptional business savvy which saw sale of her wines throughout Europe. She, alongside her Cellar Master, is also credited with creating the first rose Champagne, and with the invention of the riddling table; saving time and precious wine during the disgorgement process.
At her death in 1866, Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin is one of the world's most respected Champagne brands, with the signature of the 'Grand Dame de Champagne' marking every label of its wines.
2% Pinot Noir, 8% Meunier, 15% Chardonnay, 15% red wine, all from Bouzy. Winemaker Dominique Demarville has been investing considerably in red wine production facilities. Confident pale rose colour. Very racy, crackling, pacey wine with an attractively refreshing green streak. I tasted this wine immediately after Dom Pérignon Rosé 2003 and it withstood the comparison well, albeit in a completely different style and considerably more advanced in its evolution. There is lovely energy to this wine which certainly could be enjoyed without food, even if Demarville likes it with lobster, lamb and even beef. Quite persistent.
Vivid yellow. Aromas of orange, buttered toast and white flowers are lifted by a bright mineral topnote. Rich and expansive on entry, then brighter and more lithe in the middle, offering fresh pear, citrus pith and ginger flavors and a touch of brioche. Closes on a spicy note, with strong thrust and impressive cling. Drinks very nicely right now but has the substance and spine to suggest that patience will be rewarded.
