Stephane's Morey Villages is all about finesse, as are the best wines of the commune, thin skins, pale colours, minerality, with a soft violet and raspberry edge to the fruit. The elevated citrus, a marque of ageing potential in Burgundy wines, will be further tamed by silky tannins with a couple more years bottle age. For now the wine is still primary with ripe high-toned plum and strawberry notes, edgy but elegant, with aeration the tertiary flavours open up. A great source for serious traditional Pinot Noir. Try it with soft cheeses and gamey dishes, pigeon etc...
Stephane Magnien is a fourth generation wine maker, still making the families wines in a very traditional manner. The wines are very true to their terroir, light and delicate, not at all heavy or forced as is the fashion of many modern wines. We enjoyed our introduction to these wines and look forward to a long relationship with another true artisan of the noble Pinot Noir.
2012 is the first vintage we have assessed and offered en-primeur. Stephane was unsurprisingly upbeat about his wines having received quite a lot of positive feedback in the French press. These are delicate wines, elegant with finesse. The charming style of this vintage made them all the more attractive for me.
