The Clos Pitois was created by the Monks in 1421. The global area is about 3 hectares, planted half in Pinot Noir and half in Chardonnay grapes. The harvest is entirely done by hand, the picking and the sorting of the grapes is performed in the vineyard on a sorting table in a very rigorous way. Exclusively from 50 years old Pinot Noir vines from a stony clay-limestone soil, matured for one year in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new....This is obviously a very serious plot.
Belland's wines had been on our radar for a while. With the success of their wines from the 2009 and 2010, we could resist no longer! Several tastings of the 2008s, 2009s and 2010s, have underlined our opinion that this is one of the best value sources for fine red and white Burgundy Wines. After the excellent 2011 wines, the 2012 vintage is even better, and the 2013 has also recieved excellent reviews from Allen Meadows, the Burgundy Wine Guru, amognst others. We are particularly fond of his Santenay wines, the home of the domaine itself.
"2012 red vintage is very concentrated, long in the mouth with fresh and very ripe fruit. They are quite similar to the 2005's but the tannins are smoother."' Roger Belland
"Real dedication and skilled wine-making amongst some of the well priced vineyards of the Cotes de Beaune, I repeat here what I have said for the last several vintages, which is that Belland's wines represent very good quality/price values, provided of course that you like the style as it won't be for everyone. I wish to stress that the style is not extreme but neither is it traditional." Allen Meadows - Burghound
This a delightful wine and one which intrigues me, the quality is striking and yet it is an appellation that is not generally sought out in red. There is an underlying elegance beyond the Santenays at the Belland address. There is freshness and zip on the nose and the palate, it has good minerality, bredth and length. 2015 - 2020+
