Fixin is traditionally quite stern and austere with elevated minerality. With bottle age the softness of the charming Pinot fruit calms and mellows the palate, The result is a seriously contemplative wine. Audoin's Le Rozier certainly follows this ethos, the ripe 2012 vintage adding a welcome extra layer of richness.
Our pursuit of great Burgundy Wines is ongoing, especially as the most famous domaines have become ultra exclusive in price as well as stature. These latest additions from the northerly, Cotes de Nuits village of Marsannay are certainly offering Pinot lovers access to fine quality at sensible prices. Cyril Audoin joined his father Charles in 2000, after learning his trade in various vineyards all over the world. Together they work 35 acres, allowing the natural climatic conditions to dictate the style of their wines in each vintage. The results are evident, with increased media attention from wine writers and publications, particularly from Allen Meadows Burghound.
A restrained and all but mute nose only grudgingly reveals notes of red and dark pinot fruit, earth and sauvage hints. The underlying minerality is even more prominent than it usually is, with detailed and highly energetic flavors that possess good drive as the tannins are firm and mildly austere. This is old school Fixin.
