The plot is situated at the top of the Hermitage Hill, around the chapel. The elevated position of the vineyard, over 200 metres, allows long ripening at the end of the growing season. The soil of loess provides excellent drainage for rainwater. Vines are over 80 years old and are planted on poor granitic soils. L'Ermite traditionally produces the most elegant and aromatic Ermitage. It has powerful tannins, smoky notes and black pepper.

Information About Chapoutier
'An Estate that has nurtured its vineyards with the greatest respect for natural balance and terroir since 1808.'

The Chapoutier family can trace their history in the Rhône region back to 1808, but it was in 1879 that Polydor Chapoutier bought his first vineyards and began making wine. In the mid-20th century Max Chapoutier led the business, until his retirement in 1977, after which his sons Michel Chapoutier and Marc Chapoutier took his place.

It was Michel Chapoutier's skills that sparked the rise of Maison Chapoutier. His energy, vision and need to express terroir has been the driving force behind the maison's success. Now with wines produced in several appellations of the Rhone and  Rousillon regions, Alsace and also Australia,  Michel Chapoutier is one of the most revered wine makers in the world and has received global recognition for the quality of his works.

Tasting Date : 01 December 2011

Crushed rock, spring flowers and a liqueur of granite are all present in the inky/purple colored 2010 Ermitage L’Ermite. It is almost a crime trying to describe a wine such as this, since so few people will ever get to taste it in its full prime, which is probably a good 25-30 years away. Super-pure, rich and full-bodied, this is a great example from Michel Chapoutier, certainly up there with the top vintages of this wine to date. It will require unbelievable patience and needs at least a decade or more of cellaring before being consumed.

Rating : 98-10/100
