The mastery of blending by Jean-Louis Chave creates some of the finest wine from the Hermitage region with remarkable consistency! This Hermitage Rouge is 100% Syrah sourced from some of the best plots available, and handled with traditional techniques. Fully mature, but definitely has a few more years left in the bottle! Enjoy!
The Chave family is one of the oldest winegrowing families in the world; each bottle label bears the inscription 'Vignerons de Pere en Fils depuis 1481'. This is certainly true, as they were cultivating vines in the area now known as St-Joseph in the fifteenth century before moving south into the Rhone Valley in the nineteenth century during the Phylloxera crisis and begin growing vines in the Hermitage appellation. Their original cellars in the village of Mauves are still in use today. Jean-Louis's father is responsible for extending the estate boundries to the current 14.5ha in Hermitage. Ten are planted to Syrah for two Hermitage Rouge cuvees and the remainder are planted to 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne for the Hermitage Blanc.
Jean-Louis Chave himself started working the domaine with his father in 1992, having completed a degree in oenology at the University of California, Davis after an MBA. He places his focus on the quality of the grapes and has two thirds of the vines treated by hand, then his mastery of blending creates excellence in the final wines. A personal hobby is the rejuvenation of the former Chave vineyards in St-Joseph.
Evolved ruby. Old and cool. Dry finish. Rather jagged on the palate at this stage.
A step up and showing more minerality, structure and length, with a masculine style, the 1995 Hermitage is drinking beautifully today. Described as disappointing by Jean-Louis over the past 5 years or so, it appears to be opening up and possesses fabulous, liquid rock-like qualities to go with cassis, blackberry and wild herbs. Medium to full-bodied, fabulously textured, rich and stretching out nicely on the finish, enjoy this beauty over the coming decade.
I was surprised by how much fun this was to drink as I expected it be more firm, and in need of time. Happily, this was rocking! Concentrated, with freshness, as with most 1995 wines, there is a masculine edge to the wines character, but with air, the wine really starting showing its elegant side. Great textures, intriguing aromatics and loads of perfectly ripe fruit, all in balance and working together, this is a really nice vintage for Chave.
The 1995 Hermitage, on the other hand, is totally sublime. Rose petal, black pepper, dried flowers and sage are some of the many Syrah-inflected aromas that blossom in the glass in a perfumed, sensual wine that captivates all of the senses. With just six people at the table, there is plenty of wine to go around. This is a dazzling showing.
