Auguste Clape's Cornas is produced from the oldest Syrah vines in the domaine, all between thirty and sixty years old. Whole clusters are fermented for twelve days before aging for 22 months. This is a rich and concentrated, spicy wine which can be quite unwieldy in youth, but a few years of rest will allow it to bloom!
The Clape family was forced to move to the Rhone valley in the early 20th century from Languedoc as grower strikes caused business to be completely unfeasible. Auguste Clape broke the trend in the Cornas region, by bottling his own wine, a move which many winegrowers followed. Today, his son Pierre-Marie and grandson Olivier work with him, using old-school, instinctual methods where the perilous vineyards resist modern machinery.
Domaine Auguste Clape farms these near 8ha of vineyards, growing mostly Syrah with a tiny plot of Marsanne for a Saint Peray Blanc.
