Domaine Lafond only produce a single wine from their small parcel of old vines in Chateauneuf du Pape and low production makes this a rare yet exceptional example of Chateauneuf du Pape rouge.
The blend for this wine is 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre from vines averaging 40 years old!
The roots of the Domaine date back 1780 when Jean-Pierre Lafond’s great-uncle, Pascal Odoyer, Govenor of Tavel, became one of the pioneers in wine production and his estate has been handed down from generation to generation ever since. Involved in the foundation of the Tavel appellation in the 1940's the family now run by Jean-Pierre Lafond and son Pascal began selling bottled wines of Cotes du Rhone Lirac and Tavel in the late 1970's, adding the fine parcel of Chateauneuf du Pape in 2001. The property decided to go entirely organic, officially designated so in 2009.
These medal winning wines are of the highest quality in their subsequent appelations. The Tavel Rose 2010 received the Coup de Coeur in the French Guide Hachette and the Lirac Blanc won the regional trophy in the Decanter wine challenge. Robert Parker has also been very complimentary about the quality of the Chateauneuf du Pape and Cotes du Rhone in recent vintages.
Tasted blind. Deep purple. Intense, seamless ripe fruit with very voluptuous texture. As though 2014 had never happened! A real charmer with nothing out of place. Lip smacking and long.
Deep ruby. Potent mineral- and smoke-accented dark berries and candied flowers on the deeply perfumed nose. At once rich and vibrant, offering fresh black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a repeating touch of smokiness. Turns sweeter on the clinging finish, which features supple tannins and an echo of lavender pastille.
Animalistic, garrigue, olive and red berry notes get you going. On the palate, the wine has a lush, silky, polished, medium bodied texture. The fresh, cherry quality in the finish is made even better with a blast of thyme and peppery spice.
