A blend of 30% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise and 5% Cinsault. The remaining 15% is made from small portions of the other eight varietals permitted in Chateauneuf du Pape. Each organically grown variety is vinified separately and carefully blended to produce the perfect expression of the terrior.
This wine has a distinctly savoury and earthy flavour underlying juicy red fruit. It is mature but could be left to rest for several more years!
Chateau de Beaucastel has a long history stretching back several hundred years to 1549 when Pierre de Beaucastel purchased a plot of land in what would become Chateauneuf du Pape. Under the direction of the five generations of the Perrin family, Beaucastel has consistently produced wines of excellent quality, each expressing the characteristics of the terrior.
The current area of land planted with vines by Chateau de Beaucastel, covers 100 hectares, 75 of which are within Chateauneuf du Pape. All thirteen of the historical varieties are grown, harvested and vinified separately and aged for one year in oak.
Beaucastel produces five wines: a red and a white each from Cotes du Rhone and Chateauneuf du Pape and an old vines cuvee of Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc.
Scented and fresh, still showing some red fruit and a touch of vanilla. Elegant and silky. Lingers with flavours of thyme and a hint of bitter chocolate. 'A Grenache vintage', according to Marc Perrin.
The atypically Grenache-dominated 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape is fully mature and gives up tons of kirsch, garrigue, licorice and a touch of gaminess in its full-bodied, layered and ripe personality. More rounded and sexy than most vintages, it has no hard edges, plenty of mid-palate depth and a great finish. I see no reason to delay gratification, but it will certainly hold for 5-10 years.
