Chateau Clos des Menuts is generous in style crafted with care from vines close to the walls of the famous medieval town, with 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, built to age gracefully over a decade. The terroir is clay-limestone and sand-and-clay soil over a hard pan and iron-dross subsoil allowing excellent drainage. The 2010 is beginning to show well now, still quite firm in the style of the powerful 2010 vintage. Works well with robust cuisine.
Clos des Menuts is a familiar Chateau name for those who have visited the beautiful medieval town of St Emilion, located as it is just a short distance from the entrance to the town along the characterful cobbled streets. The wines like many in the region are Merlot dominated, produced from vines often growing beside the old town walls.
Deep plum centre, starting to pink at the rim, soy, beef extract even marmite on the nose, leathery, this is quite complex and evolved on the nose, the savoury over hauling the fruit at present, chocolate cherry coming through, still quite tight in the mid palate but easing up round the edges, peppery, still quite lean, but powerful, need a bit more time, maybe a couple of years yet.
