Château La Lagune develops a 3rd Grand Cru Classé of Bordeaux whose blend combines the emblematic varieties of Medoc - Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot - and offers, throughout the vintages, wines recognized for their balance, finesse and elegance . In this same spirit of excellence, the property also produces a second wine, called 'Moulin de la Lagune', and since 2004, a third cuvee named 'Mademoiselle L'. Planted on one of the most perfect gravelly hills in the region, the La Lagune vineyard extends over 80 hectares, where winemaker Caroline Frey has been working for many years to establish an environmentally friendly viticulture based on Practices from organic and biodynamic agriculture. It is above all to preserve the terroirs, the soil and the vines, but also the health of the winegrowers who work there. The official transition to organic conversion was initiated in 2013, with certification scheduled for the 2016 harvest. This natural and adapted approach to each plot plays a fundamental role in the quality of the wines. It allows the fruit to draw from the soil all the complexity and finesse of a terroir, to restore them, thanks to a patient and precise vinification and a barrel breeding carried out according to the traditional method.
I have always enjoyed the 1989 La Lagune. At first I thought it was marginally superior to the 1990, but they are essentially equivalent in quality, although the 1989 possesses less fat, and a more ruggedly tannic structure. The color is a healthy dark ruby, and the wine offers up a smoky, sweet vanillin, jammy berry-scented nose with aromas of weedy tobacco. The wine is medium-bodied, with excellent purity and richness, and gobs of red and black currant fruit nicely dosed with new oak. The wine's grip is more noticeable than in the 1990, and the finish more attenuated, but still impressively long.
