Chateau Rieussec is synonomous with great sweet wines; now part of the Chateau Lafite stable, continued investment has been guaranteed and the wines continue to impress. The 2008 vintage in Sauternes was very good if not exceptional, as it was in 2007..

'the growing seasons of 2007 and 2008, there is a significant difference between the resulting wines, for tangibly the 2008s do not have the same level of botrytis, weight or concentration. But dismiss the 2008s at your peril: there are a cluster of superb, steely Sauternes imbued with a thrilling sense of nervosité and precision.' Neal Martin The Wine Advocate.

Its association with Lafite has created a false market. Effectively a surplus of stock, taken in liew of en primeur allocations of the first growth claret, has reduced the prices to almost half of the release price. There is no question that this is an absolute bargain.

Information About Chateau Rieussec

The Rieussec estate was originally owned by Carmelite monks, but after its confiscation during the French revolution it was sold into private ownership. During the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, Rieussec was awarded Premier Cru status.

Since 1984 Chateau Rieussec has been a part of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). New ownership coincided with more rigorous selection measures and renovation of the winemaking facilities and cellars; the surge in quality was first visible in the 1988 vintage.

The vineyard of Rieussac is one of the largest in Sauternes, covering 93 hectares, and planted to 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle.

Tasting Date : 01 February 2012

Tasted single blind against its peers. The Chateau Rieussec 2008 should become an excellent Sauternes for the vintage. It has a floral bouquet with peach, tinned apricot and a touch of marmalade, all with fine delineation, and touches of lemon curd developing with aeration. The palate is mellifluous on the entry, with great depth and a luscious, vanillary note with hints of orange peel, marmalade and quince towards the long finish. Excellent. Tasted January 2012.
