Chateau Fonreaud is composed of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot creating a Bordeaux rouge with fine balance between fruit intensity and roundness!
Fonréaud", called "Font-réaux" in centuries gone by, means "Royal Fountain". Legend has it that in the 12th century, the King of England and husband of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry II Plantagenet, stopped here to quench his thirst and drank from a spring of cool water. The spring still exists in our park today.
The cellars were built in the 17th century, then modified over time. The Château replaced the original farm building when then owner Henri Le Blanc de Mauvezin decided to build it in 1850. The Château was built to the plans of Bordeaux architect Garros and completed in 1855. Its very elegant architecture appeals to visitors.
Since 1962, the estate has been the property of the Chanfreau family who have worked hard to renovate the vineyards and winemaking facilities, allowing the estates wines to reach the quality they deserve!
Deep crimson. Rather gorgeously ripe and glossy on the nose. Very sweet black fruits on the palate followed by really quite a charge of ripe tannin. Maybe not the longest-laster, but overall well done! A delicate touch.
The 2016 Fonreaud is certainly a Listrac that is worth checking out. The bouquet is very well defined with supremely well-integrated oak that allows the terroir to show through. There is a subtle Margaux-like floral scent coming through. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins and a very good backbone. This Fonreaud is one of the most precise that I have tasted and there is tangible tension all the way through to the refined finish. This Listrac has produced some very fine wines recently and this 2016 could be the best yet.
