A classic left bank Cru Bourgeois; a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Hubert de Bouard of Chateau Angelus began consulting at Lanessan in 2015 and we should see a significant improvement in wine quality!
The property, with 24 hectares of vines, was bought in 1793 by the wine merchant Jean Delbos. In 1960 Delbos’ son, Jean Bouteiller made significant additions from the vineyards of neighbouring chateaus, completing today’s 45 hectares under vine. The Chateau Lanessan itself was designed by Henri Duphot, and completed in 1878 complete with a winemaking cellar.
The 80 hectare Lanessan estate is found within the commune of Cussac-Fort-Medoc near Saint-Julien in the Haut-Medoc appellation. Vines are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc.
Fine deep colour, solid nose with plenty of open black fruits, nicely plump on the palate, the freshness comes through more than the tannin, good support. Bitter chocolate on the finish.
A structured young red with currant and berry character. Medium body, velvety tannins and a savory finish.
Lifted aromatic nose. Polished tannins with some inner glow. Dry end. Very solid performance.
The 2016 Lanessan has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet with graphite tinged black fruit—fine delineation with impressive focus, even if it is not the most complex Haut-Medoc that I encountered in this vintage out of barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannin, well-judged acidity, plenty of black fruit with a harmonous, engaging and slightly tarry finish. This is a great Lanessan that should give 20 years of pleasure. This comes highly recommended and I expect it will land at the top of my banded score once in bottle.
