Information About Chateau Branaire Ducru

This estate was founded in 1680 by Jean-Baptiste Braneyre who bought a fragment of the neighbouring Chateau Beychevelle as it was being broken up to pay its owner’s substantial debts. The modern stage of Chateau Branaire Ducru begins in 1988 when Patrick Maroteaux, a former banker and businessman with no experience in the wine industry, bought the estate and began working and investing to improve wine quality from the ground up. he would also extend the boundries of the estate to closely match those in 1855 when Chateau Branaire Ducru was classified as a Fourth Growth estate.

The 60 hectare vineyards of the estate are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 4% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Vine age averages at 35 years, with some venerable vines reaching 90 years old.

Tasting Date : 01 March 2011

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. This has a more open-knit bouquet with red-berried, leafy fruit, scents of hot bricks and a touch of cedar with fine delineation although it would benefit from a little more power. The palate is medium-bodied with an understated leafy entry, quite dry and austere and needing more flesh and depth towards the finish. Light and agreeable, but not a memorable 2001 as I had once hoped.

Rating : 89/100
