Information About Troplong Mondot

In a region where most estates hardly exceed 10 hectares, Troplong Mondot's 33 hectares make it one of the "biggest" Saint-Emilion estates. The vineyard covers the steep hillside and extends south all the way to the borderline with the Pavie domain. Exposure is outstanding with perfect conditions for natural drainage. Thick limestone under a layer of dense clay, plus abundant underground water combine to give the old Troplong Mondot vines the fertility only the grands crus can claim. This limestone clay soil, typical of the hillside vintages of Saint-Emilion, is rich in sedimentary fragments of flint and limestone. The wine owes its splendid colour and superb concentration to this unique feature of the Troplong mondot geology.

A fabulous effort, this sleeper of the vintage may turn out to be the finest Troplong-Mondot since the 1990. The black/purple-colored 1998 exhibits floral, blueberry, blackberry, liquorice, vanillin, and truffle-like aromas (or is it charcoal/graphite?). Dense, full-bodied, and pure, yet extremely fresh and elegant, this beautifully focused wine needs 3-5 years of cellaring.

Rating : 93
