1989 was a strange year in that its incredibly poor start led many to call off all bets! However, the following hot and dry summer more than made up for the earlier stall and the grapes reached peak ripeness much earlier than was expected. The resulting wine was among the best in the decade for many producers! The 1989 Pichon-Lalande is at its ideal maturity and there is no need to wait longer. Drink up!

Information About Chateau Pichon Lalande

The estate was received by Jaques de Pichon Longueville as a dowry when he married the founder’s daughter. An effective chateau owner, he was elected to be the first president of the Bordeaux Parliament. The estate was broken up between his children with part eventually becoming Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande or Pichon Lalande, and the other becoming Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron.

All five Bordeaux grapes are grown across the estate’s 85 hectares with a high proportion of Merlot in its wines.

Not quite as dark as the Baron but still a very healthy garnet with some development at the rim. Pretty herbaceous on the nose, strong capsicum and that note of lavender that seems to appear as herbaceousness ages. Again herbaceous on the palate, tannins drier than some but it finishes very fresh thanks to that leafiness. Starting to dry a bit as the fruit on the middle is not (or no longer) very generous.

Approaching full maturity, Pichon-Lalande’s1989 has a deep ruby/plum color with some lightening at the edge. The nose offers sweet plums and creme de cassis intermixed with vanilla and graphite. The wine is lush, medium to full-bodied, and layered with texture, low acidity, sweet tannin, and the hallmark purity and elegance this estate routinely produces. Some tannins remain, but this wine has reached its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for another 10-15 years. Anticipated maturity: Now-2017.

Full, deep red. Flamboyant aromas of cassis, currant leaf, tobacco, herbs and animal fur. Sweet, lush and lively; already showing lovely inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes long, strong and lively, with firm tannins and slow-mounting persistence. Earlier bottles of this wine appeared to be a bit more exotic, even slightly animal, but this offers a lovely combination of purity and sheer ripeness. Drink over the next 15 years.
