This vintage is now in its prime! Rich and smooth, with impresive sweetness, there is no longer any reason to hold back with the corkscrew.
The estate was received by Jaques de Pichon Longueville as a dowry when he married the founder’s daughter. An effective chateau owner, he was elected to be the first president of the Bordeaux Parliament. The estate was broken up between his children with part eventually becoming Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande or Pichon Lalande, and the other becoming Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron.
All five Bordeaux grapes are grown across the estate’s 85 hectares with a high proportion of Merlot in its wines.
Scented. Some transparent lusciousness. Not nearly as solid as most Pauillacs. Though it is certainly dry on the end. Pretty reliable even if not an absolutely soaring success.
A distinctive bouquet of violets, soy, pepper, blackberries, cassis, and tree bark gives this 2001 a singular style. This dense ruby/purple-colored blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and a whopping 14% Petit Verdot exhibits plenty of structure, wonderful sweetness, a closed style, but a rich, textured, persistent character. The unusually large percentage of Petit Verdot gives the wine more structure and less initial charm. This beauty needs some time in the cellar.
Blending 50% Cabernet Sauvignon , 36% Merlot and a whopping 14% Petit Verdot , this medium/full bodied wine offers earth, wood, forest floor, floral, blackberry, cassis and tobacco in the nose. Silk and velvet in texture, this supple, elegant, Pauillac is delicious today. There is no reason to wait to pop a cork. Drink now or over the next 15 years.
