Information About Chateau Palmer

Initially founded as Chateau de Gascq in 1748 in the Margaux appellation, the estate was sold to an Englishman, Major General Charles Palmer. While through hard work expanding the property and making its wines fashionable in London, Palmer was forced to sell the estate in 1844 to cover his debts. In 1853, the estate came into the hands of two brothers Isaac and Emile Pereire who beautified the estate. The brother’s descendants maintained the estate until the economic crisis in 1930. Four experienced Bordeaux families, Sichel, Mähler-Besse, Ginestet, and Miailhe, formed a syndicate to buy Chateau Palmer and restore it to excellence.

Vines at Chateau Palmer are planted to 47% each of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% of Petit Verdot.

One of the all-time great Palmers (along with the 1961, 1966, 1970, 1989, 2000 and 2005), the 2009 Palmer is a blend of 52% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and a whopping 7% Petit Verdot that came in at close to 14% natural alcohol. An opaque blue/black color suggests a wine with thrilling levels of concentration and intensity, and That's exactly what a taster gets. Subtle smoke, incense and Asian spice (soy?) notes interwoven with graphite, blueberry, blackberry and cassis characteristics lead to a full-bodied, phenomenally concentrated, viscous, opulent wine with plenty of sweet tannin. This sensational Palmer reveals even more floral notes than vintages such as 2005 and 2000. It should drink well for 50 years.

Very dark purple indeed; the colour really lines the glass. Very luscious indeed. Dense and complete. Rich and yet with a kick of acidity and tannin on the finish. Beautifully made. Both long and broad. Should make great old bones.

The conditions at this old munitions base, 100 metres below ground are unrivalled, offering temperature control, In Bond facility and full replacement value insurance. The wines are stored under each client's individual "Protection Plus" account number, fully labelled and can only be released or moved with his or her written instructions. No right of lien can be exercised over wines held on each client's behalf. Client's stock can be inspected, by arrangement, at any time excluding November & December.
