1953 has been argued to be the best vintage of the century in Bordeaux and the Chateau Lafite Rothschild might have been the best wine of the vintage.

Information About Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Allegedly, there were already vineyards on the property when the Segur family organised the vineyard in the late 17th century. Vines were planted by Jaques de Segur and the estate earned a reputation for great winemaking. Jaques’ grandson, Marquis Nicolas Alexandre, lifted the wine estate into great fame with Chateau Lafite being imbibed by Louis XV of France, the British Prime Minister, Robert Walpole and future American President, Thomas Jefferson. Despite many natural and human difficulties in the years since, Chateau Lafite is considered one of the best winemaking estates in Bordeaux and has been in the Rothschild family since 1868.

The vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

On two occasions I rated the 1953 100 and on another occasion, nearly perfect. According to some old-timers, the wine has been fully mature for almost 30 years. It possesses that extraordinary Lafite fragrance of minerals, lead pencil, cedar, and spice. It is velvety-textured, wonderfully round, and sweet, but so well-delineated and balanced. It is best purchased today in magnum and larger formats unless you can be assured the wine came from a cold cellar and has not been traded frequently.

This wine still seemed to be far from over. Pale orangeish. Rich and balanced and lively. Really fresh and very, very energetic. Aerienne. Very, very Lafite with all of its soaring lift. I heard a story that Eric de Rothschild was entertaining Serena Sutcliffe MW and my fellow British wine writers Jane MacQuitty and Alice King at Lafite and offered to open a bottle of each of their vintages. They were, respectively, 1945, 1953 and 1961.
