Chateau Latour is on the St Julien/Pauillac border and adjacent to Chateau Leoville Lascases. The generosity and heavenly balance of St Julien is combined with power and strength here to create what is for some, the finest vineyard in Bordeaux.
While not a classic vintage, 1994 was a decent year for Chateau Latour with notable fruit and a generally rustic and spicy character. Fully mature, this wine is no longer one to wait for! Drink up!
The location of Chateau Latour has history dating back to 1331 where allegedly a fortress was built. This tower inspired the estate's branding but, the edifice was destroyed in the fifteenth century. In the early eighteenth century the estate entered the hands of the Segur family, who would also own what would become Mouton Rothschild and Calon Segur. Chateau Latour would remain in the Segur family until 1964. In recent times, the Chateau is owned by François Pinault and managed by Frederic Engerer who have decided to stop selling Chateau Latour En Primeur. The 2012 vintage of Chateau Latour is expected to go on sale in 2022 when the wine will be appreciated more.
Chateau Latour has 78 hectares planted with vines of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Firm, with a sense of rusticity to the tannins, the red and black fruits have a crispness, while the nose and finish share a leafy, tapenade character. The nose is the best part of the experience. It's a nice enough wine, but not a great Latour. The wine was produced from a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. This represents the most Merlot ever used in a vintage of Latour.
