Chateau Latour is on the St Julien/Pauillac border and adjacent to Chateau Leoville Lascases. The generosity and heavenly balance of St Julien is combined with power and strength here to create what is for some, the finest vineyard in Bordeaux.

2000 was described as an exceptional year by the winemakes at Chateau Latour; the warm and dry summer allowing the grapes to ripen gradually and be picked at the optimum moment! The finished wine is perfectly balanced, with huge depth and power. It is drinking nicely at the moment, but will evolve further over the next decade or so!

Information About Chateau Latour

The location of Chateau Latour has history dating back to 1331 where allegedly a fortress was built. This tower inspired the estate's branding but, the edifice was destroyed in the fifteenth century. In the early eighteenth century the estate entered the hands of the Segur family, who would also own what would become Mouton Rothschild and Calon Segur. Chateau Latour would remain in the Segur family until 1964. In recent times, the Chateau is owned by François Pinault and managed by Frederic Engerer who have decided to stop selling Chateau Latour En Primeur. The 2012 vintage of Chateau Latour is expected to go on sale in 2022 when the wine will be appreciated more.

Chateau Latour has 78 hectares planted with vines of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Breathtaking is good place to start. The velvet drenched fruit has a purity and freshness to its character that is hard to forget. Power, purity, balance and refinement, with the potential for decades of aging and a finish that sticks for more than 60 seconds is in every sip of this elixir. If you are lucky enough to have a few bottles, waiting until 2025, or 2030 is in your best interest. If you cannot keep your hands off a bottle, and you really want to pull the cork, give it 2-3 hours of air and enjoy the ride. If you're in the neighborhood and you need someone to share it with, please drop me a note!

77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot.

Just ageing at the rim. Savoury and beautiful. Mellow and refined. Bone dry. Racy finish. Kicks up its heels. Not the densest.

The 2000 Latour (a relatively abundant 14,000 cases compared to what they produced in 2009, 2008, or 2005) is “packed and stacked.” The extremely rich, black/purple color to the rim is followed by a wine with some subtle smoke, loads of minerals, a hint of vanilla, and plenty of creme de cassis as well as roasted meat and a slight scorched earth character. Broad, savory, and rich, the wine seems to be about 5 years away from full maturity and should drink well for at least 40-50 more years. A great effort, probably eclipsed only by 2003 and 2009.
