The Chateau Ausone 1982 is one of the best vintages made before the watch of Alain Vauthier. It is elegant, poised and mature! Any excuse to open a bottle of this will do!
Chateau Ausone is said to be built on the foundations of the villa of Roman statesman and poet, Decimus Magnus Ausonius who was born and lived in the Bordeaux region in the early 1st Century AD. The most recent classification of St-Emilion in 2012 named Chateau Ausone as a Premier Grand Cru Classe A, placing it in the top four estates in the appellation.
The vineyards of Chateau Ausone are divided, with half producing Cabernet Franc and the other producing Merlot.
A pleasant surprise when I think of what proprietor Alain Vauthier has done over the last decade, the outstanding 1982 Ausone exhibits plenty of licorice, fruitcake, mineral, kirsch, and black fruit characteristics. Medium-bodied and elegant with a touch of austerity at the finish, it should be consumed over the next 10 years.
Smoke, tobacco, cassis, stone, red plum, spice and black raspberry and floral scents create the perfume. Medium/full bodied and soft in texture, the wine finishes with red and black, spice coated berries. This is a nice, fully mature St. Emilion. It lacks the depth and levels of concentration found in the wines being made at the estate today.
